SHOWROOM BOOKING

1. Westerners typically spend more time indoors
than at any other time in history.

2. Building materials have become increasingly
adulterated, with the use of chemical additives
and synthetic products now making up most,
if not all, of newly constructed buildings.

3. Buildings have become increasingly airtight.

4. Most modern buildings are made out of
predominantly impervious materials (such as
concrete and synthetic paints and varnishes),
that are not 'breathable'.

This means that they do not have the ability to regulate
internal humidity, nor allow for the controlled movement of moisture and air through them. They can therefore potentially trap moisture within the fabric of the building. The presence of persistent dampness is unhealthy for the inhabitants, due to the possibility for mould and fungi to develop, and for the building itself, which, if left unchecked can lead to rotting and decay. These changes have undoubtedly had an effect on our general health and well-being. Quantifiable evidence of this can be seen through the emergence of the increasingly common 'sick building syndrome', or 'multiple chemical sensitivities', which consist of a multitude of respiratory, immune system and skin disorders.
They have developed in reaction to the inhalation
and absorption of the noxious chemicals present
in the building materials. This is made worse by
the fact that they are often trapped inside poorly
ventilated, tightly sealed, overheated buildings,
inside which people are increasingly spending
most of their time. The air inside such a building
will be of poor quality, if not poisonous.
By using earth- and lime-based finishes, all of
these conditions can be greatly improved, if not
eliminated. They are free of harmful chemicals
and toxins. They are permeable and breathable,
and thus function to regulate internal humidity.
This will help to protect the fabric of the building, and eliminate the potential for the growth of
moulds and fungi. Lime finishes have antiseptic
qualities, and earth-based finishes can even absorb
pollutants and neutralize odours. Though not
well researched at present, there also appears to
be evidence that a sufficiently thick earth plaster
is able to counteract the potentially damaging
effects of electromagnetic radiation from electrical
equipment such as mobile phones, computers and
televisions. Earth-based finishes can also act as heat
stores (thermal mass), absorbing heat and then
re-radiating it as temperatures fall. Earth-based
finishes have also been purported to influence
the composition and type of ions in inside spaces,
by encouraging the presence of small, negatively
These finishes are inherently dynamic and ever-
changing. They are sensitive to the environment
around them, and can respond to seasonal and
daily changes in temperature and levels of
humidity in the atmosphere. In this way, being
inside a building made out of these materials
can literally serve as an extension of ourself
- breathing and respiring as we do.
The textures of finishes made out of lime and
earth encourage people to touch their soft, cool
or warm surfaces. Their smells are earthy and
minerally, as they echo the earth and rocks from
where they came. These natural finishes can be
made and applied to absorb sound, thus creating

Through the use of appropriate materials, we can reduce chemical impact dramatically!
